The formation of depressed, retractile, raised, hypertrophic or keloid scars are common skin flaws than can often be a problem, not only for the appearance. There are many causes, ranging from direct injury to sutures or surgical wounds that have not closed properly, and the appearance can be improved by plastic surgery. Although some scars may never disappear completely, they can be made less visible thanks to a number of plastic surgery techniques (direct suture, Z-shaped plastics, lipofilling) or the injection of various substances (botox and corticosteroids).
Results depend to a large extent on the original scar. For the simplest scars, a few corticosteroid/botulin injections are sufficient to achieve a clear improvement, while in other cases, combined approaches involving surgery and laser therapy can improve the more challenging cases. A proper diagnostic framework is essential to choose the most effective treatment process.
