Fillers are materials that are injected into the dermis or subcutaneous tissue to fill unsightly depressions, recreate volume where desired and reduce shadows, restoring a natural glow to the face. Fully absorbable materials such as hyaluronic acid are generally used. In some cases, substances that are reabsorbed very slowly – such as calcium hydroxyapatite – can be used.
The application of fillers is an outpatient procedure. Immediately after the session, the patient will observe a relaxation in the depression treated, or a reduction in dark shadows; this improvement will gradually continue as the hyaluronic acid continues to stimulate collagen production for up to 6-8 months.
